Description: Corliss has not kept a daily diary but rather an occasional journal describing special occasions such as a family holiday to Picton, a train trip from Petone to Wellington, aspects of her teaching career, lists of stories she had written, her musical interests, and a voyage to England on the `Ayrshire' in 1914, where she studied music. Included with the volume is a copy of a letter from George H Valentine to his brother (from Lefevers Peninsula, Port Adelaide, 7 Sep 1859), and notes re the `Annie Wilson' which arrived at Wellington 22 March 1854. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music Source of title - Supplied by diarist Accompanying material - As well as the letter from Valentine to his brother (1859) there are items (photocopied) regarding the voyage of the `Annie Wilson' (1854) which appear to have been kept with the journal; accompanying the journal is a letter from the donor giving additional information about the Corliss family and himself, a direct descendant of Amos Burr of the `Tory'. Description: Born in 1900 at parents home in Roxburgh East. Second youngest of 12 children. Father a farmer. Attended local school until 15. Music played an important part in family life, and the family was known for its musical evenings. Miss Gordon began playing piano aged 10, studied locally until aged 16 when she moved to Dunedin to continued with studies. Gained ATCL, LTCL, and FTCL. Miss Gordon taught piano in Roxburgh for many years. She also formed a dance band Gordon's Orchestra which played at functions and weekly dances in Roxburgh. The band also toured Central Otago. She also played for the silent movies for a number of years and was a theatre usher. Miss Gordon was involved in many organisations and was organist for the local Presbyterian church for more than 50 years. Though her main interest was music she also made hats and painted. Miss Gordon was awarded QSM in 1979. She died in August 1993. Describes lessons with Owen Jenson and later with Paul Schramm. Gives good description of the latter's teaching methods and approach to music. Refers to letter from Paul Schramm to Arthur Schnabel which she presented to him in Edinburgh. Explains how New Zealand Government wouldn't allow sufficient American dollars to study with him in USA so he suggested studying with his son, Karl Ulrich Schnabel at Lake Como. Gives reasons for making Sydney headquarters in mid 1950s. Describes events leading to formation of Sydney Camerata Orchestra (1963). Refers to Zurich musicologist, Heinrich Jacob. Gives family background - father ran an Advertising Agency in Melbourne and Sydney - grandfather was a journalist in Palmerston North and uncle, Hugo Freeth, was editor of the Christchurch Press for 35 years. Recalls father returning to New Zealand and buying a property in 1955. Discusses: choice of career in music - contacted a neuconco (?) cornea in right eye and a fear of blindness; coming as a music teacher to Woodford House in 1951 with reference to Miss Hoby; reasons for return to Sydney and for change in career; return to Woodford House as Secretary / Bursar in 1959 and being housemistress of Rouncil for 21 years; social changes and involvement with students and other staff. Description: Heather Margaret (Maggie) Read born Darjeeling, India. Father who was in the British Army as a military policeman, died while Maggie was young. Lived in England with grandparents before coming to New Zealand (1948), living at Waiheke Island, and then to Whakatane. Recalls: attending Auckland Business College, gaining a Diploma: working in a commercial field for many years: taking up music as an interest and teaching music (classical guitar); marriage and becoming a potter. Moved to Waikino 1977. Outlines life in Waihi bringing up a family and marriage breakup. Discusses involvement with mining - is on the Waikino Liaison Committee which was originally formed to liaise between Cyprus, as it was then, and the people of Waikino - has since become a sort of Ratepayers Association but still with a connection to mines and new owners. Mentions local potters - Bill Roberts, Michael O'Donnell and Flora Ogilvine. Talks about involvement in the Employment Creating Scheme around Waihi presently. Refers to Equal Employment Act. Recalls, that as soon as brothers were able to take responsibility, father bought or opened stores in neighbouring dairy centres and finally in New Plymouth. Feels that Hughson was a respected name in West Taranaki. Explains introduction to music from an early age and making their own music in Taranaki 80 years ago. Description: Photographs collected by, and relating to, Judith Clark and her family, taken between circa 1880 and circa 2012 by a range of photographers. The collection is mainly images of people, many of Judith Clark over the course of her lifetime, as well as friends, family, students, colleagues, and other people in the music world. The collection is in two distinct sets: family photographs, and photographs from her professional and social life. Many images show Judith Clark with her mother Ivy Clark (nee Martis). They also feature various extended Martis family members including Judith Clark's aunts, cousins, and maternal grandmother. One image shows Charles Suckling, Judith Clark's great grandfather. Photographs relating to Judith Clark's work as a piano teacher include images of her students and images relating to her work with The Institute of Registered Music Teachers (IMRT). She is also photographed with other musicians, with identified people including Michael Houstoun, Richard Mapp, Deidre Irons, Lili Krause, Douglas Lilburn, and Carlo Zecchi. Some images (prints and 35mm negatives) show Judith Clark being made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1998 for her significant contribution to music in New Zealand. Quarter plate negatives include images featuring Judith Clark as a child; she is pictured in costume and with two young boys. Negatives also show Ivy Clark, Dorothy Martis, unidentified women with houses and gardens, an unidentified woman at the beach with a camera around her neck, a view of a beach from high above, and a brick house with a circular window in the door. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music. Title supplied by Library Clark left New Zealand in 1955 to study music in London, Geneva, Paris, Salzburg, and Rome. She returned in 1963 to establish a private teaching practice in Wellington, was appointed lecturer in piano performance at Victoria University in 1976, and worked with the Society, later Institute, of Registered Music Teachers.
