Benyon, The Great, 1901-1978, Beynon, Edgar Wilson, 1901-1978, The Great Benyon, 1901-1978

Magician who toured New Zealand regularly between 1949 and 1969. Born in Christchurch in 1901, and put on his first performance as a fire-eater at the age of five, at the Methodist Church Hall in Linwood, in 1907. The son of Mr W M Beynon (aged 85 in September 1954), of New Brighton, Christchurch. He made his first professional appearance after winning one of Fuller's talent quests at the age of 16 in Christchurch. Before this, he worked in Weeks Ltd, printers. Left New Zealand before 1919, and returned in 1949 to tour. Spent time overseas in Australia, South Africa, The United Kingdom and Ireland. His wife Doris, daughter, and son-in-law all toured to New Zealand with him and performed in the show. In 1935, one of his three daughters burned to death while practising for a show in London. Fire also destroyed his belongings on tour in 1952 in Christchurch.
