Cole, Leslie, 1892-1978, Levante, The Great, 1892-1978, The Great Levante, 1892-1978

Australian magician, the Great Levante toured New Zealand in 1921, 1941 and 1965. As a teenager he helped found the Australian Society of Magicians, and appeared in military propaganda films in World War I. On his 1921 visit, he was one of the Levante and Keech duo from Maskelyne and Cook's Egyptian Hall of Mysteries in London (Cabot scrapbook v 55). On that visit he threw himself from the Christchurch pier, chained in leg-irons and double handcuffs (see Cabot scrapbook vol 51), and effected his escape. He was reported to have risen from being "once a speiler on a fairground, selling fountain pens, appearing in a boxing booth, and riding in a circus" to have become "one of the world's greatest illusionists" (Cabot scrapbook vol 46). He was described in a Birmingham paper of 1935 as the "world-famous Australian illusionist" (Cabot scrapbook vol 46). His 1941 act included the Magic Kettle trick, shooting through a girl assistant, swallowing razor blades, and various disappearing tricks. His final tour of New Zealand appears to have been in 1965.
