Description: Abel Tasman's ships the Zeehaen and the Heemskerck, close to Three Kings Islands, with two Maori men outlined against the skyline. Engraved by Frederik Ottens from drawings (now in the Dutch National Archives in den Haag) by Isaac Gilsemans, made on Tasman's voyage to New Zealand in December 1642. This view, with its apparently large figures of Maori outlined against the sky, compared with the reduced size of Tasman's ships in the foreground, is thought to have given rise to the European belief that Maori were giants. Description: Golden Bay in December 1642, during the visit of Abel Tasman. A canoe of Maori men in the foreground, and two views of Tasman's ships, the Heemskerck and the Zeehaen (both flying the Dutch flag), sailing away in the left foreground, and surrounded by canoes and firing their canon in the middle distance. A rowboat (the cockboat of the Zeehaen) is between the two ships, with its occupants being attacked in the centre. Also in the left foreground can be seen the Heemskerck's pinnace towing the Zeehaen's cockboat back to the two ships after the attack. The hills of Golden Bay form a backdrop to the scene. The canoe in the foreground appears to be double-hulled. The rowers all have topknot hairstyles. The man standing on the right at the prow of the canoe is wearing a woven garment, covering his shoulders and tied at the breast, while the others have loin-cloths, and in one case, a garment that envelopes the torso.
