Warnock, Thomas, 1851-1939

Born on 16 Apr 1851 at Grey Abbey, County Down, Northern Ireland. Came from Belfast to Auckland on the `Lady Jocelyn' in 1878; a fiddle player. Worked at Kirkcaldie and Stains, Wellington, in 1884 and in 1886 established Warnock, Kelly and Adkin, a general drapery business in Wellington. In 1910 he moved the business to Wanganui and by 1986, it was a menswear business. Listed in Wises Directories between 1912 and ca 1940, as a draper, Victoria Avenue, Wanganui.(Birth and death dates supplied by descendant Peter Warnock)

Description: The papers comprises a holograph diary kept by Warnock while a passenger on the `Lady Jocelyn' in 1878 from Belfast to Auckland; original and photocopy of his ticket; testimonial from Hawkins, Robertson Ferguson and Co, Belfast; Warnocks centennial supplement (1986) and two ledgers and two cash books for Warnock's, 1901-1917 Source of title - Supplied Warnock came to New Zealand in 1878. He was employed by Kirkcaldie and Stains, Wellington, in 1884 and in 1886 established his own store, Warnock, Adkin and Kelly in 1886.
