Description: Shows one of the managers of the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi, congratulating Tonks, a designer, on his thumbprint logo design for Te Papa Tongarewa, Museum of New Zealand. Tonks on the right is producing more of these designs by pressing his inked thumb on to sheets of paper. A comment on the the final controversial Saatchi & Saatchi logo design adopted by Te Papa, about April 1997. The inscription beneath the drawing indicates that Eric Heath sent the unsolicited cartoon in to Richard Long, the editor of the Dominion. It was probably unpublished. Comment on Helen Clark and Jenny Shipley both being in tears at Waitangi, but for different reasons. Comment on the relationship between alcohol sponsorship in rugby and players developing an unhealthy interest in alcohol. Description: Records include minutes of directors' meetings, 1924-1967; annual and financial reports, 1945-1968; correspondence files, 1907-1972; list of directors, 1936-1963; agreements and papers re shareholders, 1914-1935; wages overtime and tax book, 1959; who's who in the agency taken from `Mercantile Gazette', 1930; newspaper advertisement from the `Dominion', 1928; miscellaneous papers Source of title - Supplied The company was founded in Wellington in 1891 by Charles Haines. He was joined by Mr F W Vosseler who became a partner for some years. In 1910 Sir William Appleton commenced as a book keeper and in 1918 when the business was formed into a private company two-thirds of the shares were held by Haines and one third by Appleton. In 1923 the company was enlarged and in addition to the two main members some staff members then became shareholders. The agency had offices in Auckland, Palmerston North, Christchurch, Dunedin and head office in Wellington. In 1884 they bought out Carlton, Carruthers, Du Chateau Advertising Company, and various other small businesses and subsequently became Fancourt Holdings who in turn were bought out by the American company Foote, Cone & Belding, who have an office in Auckland. The agency had recently created a highly visible and popular ad campaign for Honda which was based on the thought 'Honda.
