Tinakori Road runs from left to right in the immediate foreground. The flying squadron of British warships which accompanied the Duke of Edinburgh in his visit to New Zealand are at anchor in the harbour. Description: Harold Francis Beamish discusses his childhood and school life prior to World War I, on the Whana Whana estate, where he was tutored at home and later attended Wanganui Collegiate and Huntly Boarding School. Describes in detail how he entered the Royal Naval Air Service in London 1915, his training at Crystal Palace, and Cranwell, and his service with 303 Squadron flying with Canadians over France. Discusses life as a World War I pilot in detail as well as flying techniques, dog fights and bombing by hand. Was awarded the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross). Also discusses the history of Whana Whana Station; his family; his love of horses and farming life in pre and post World War I, in Hawkes Bay. Other topics discussed include: station servants, shepherds and farmhands; blade shearing; clearing of land and sowing; the 1900 flood in Hawkes Bay; transport; stock droving; stock sales; rabbiting and employment of full time rabbiters; hunting weka and hares; dances and other entertainment; swagmen; dependence on horses; delivery of newspapers and a detailed account of the Napier earthquake as it affected the farm. Talks about the advent of the first cars as well as the reduction to subsistence farming during the Depression in the 1930s.
