Grant, Andrew McGregor, 1867-1923

District constable stationed at Te Whaiti from 1900 until his death. Married to Te Wehi Paerangi, from Rotoiti, and was "a well liked figure" in the Ureweras. He acted as a guide for the main group of police who went to Maungapohatu and gave evidence during Rua Kenana's trial in 1916. Description: Unbound pages from two photograph albums, with images relating to the Presbyterian mission in the Whakatane District, taken circa 1920s by unidentified photographers. The images show a wide variety of identified scenes, groups, buildings and events including: - opening day of the school at Matahi. - rallys of Maori mission workers in 1921, 1923, 1924. - local Maori people. - mission hospital at Nuhaka. - portrait of Rua Kenana and Rev John George Laughton. - mission house at Matahi. Accompanying information - Five photocopied pages, provided by Binney, with the note "From Rev Fletcher's collection. Now at Whakatane Museum (1986) (Duplicated in Fowler) " Relationship complexity - Some images duplicated at PAColl-9928-27. An album with the same images, from the collection of Rev Henry James Fletcher, is held at the Whakatane Museum. Photographer unidentified, except for a two-part panorama of Maungapohatu Pa, probably taken by Percy R Wilkinson, a surveyor sent in by the police to gather evidence for them A label at the back of the album advertises Walter Suckling (as the publisher?) It is understood that a number of similar photograph albums of the trial were created. Rua Kenana was accused of using seditious language, counselling others to murder or disable the police, and resisting arrest. He received the sentence of one year's hard labour followed by 18 months' imprisonment. Inscriptions: Album page - Frontispiece - To my old friend - - Hare Hongi.
