Bartleet, Ellen Wintrup, b. 1896 :The mast of the wrecked ship. Otaki, Wellington West ...

Date: 1932

By: Bartleet, Ellen Wintrup, 1896-

Reference: A-238-003

Description: Looking south along the beach, probably at Waitarere, not Otaki, with the wreck of the Hydrabad near the water's edge. Other Titles - Waitarere Beach, Hydrabad The title is worded as 'The mast of the wrecked ship. [New line] Otaki Wellington West Coast. [New line] After many years...[etc]. The view was initially believed by the Library to show a wreck of a ship called Otaki near Wellington; however of the four ships called Otaki, none was wrecked anywhere near Wellington and it seems more likely that the artist has mistakenly described Waitarere Beach, north of Otaki, as Otaki. The wreck of the Hydrabad is on Waiterere Beach Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 260 x 370 mm Provenance: Donation: Mrs R.B. Bartleet, Auckland 1972
