Description: Land deed with survey plan. Land deed prepared by MacGregor Ramsay, Solicitors, Dunedin, records conveyance of Clifton Settlement freehold lands in the Pomahaka and Clutha District. Parties to the transaction dated 3 April 1917 are John Roberts, William Telford, and 'His Majesty the King'. Includes a manuscript survey plan dated 20 March 1917, signed by both Roberts and Telford. The map bears the inscription: "This is the annexed plan mentioned or referred to in Deed of Conveyance made this third day of April 1917 between John Roberts of the first part, William Telford of the second part and His Majesty the King of the third part." This drawing appears to be a copy by an unknown hand of the original drawings by an unknown artist on Marion Dufresne's voyage, 1772. It may be a drawing preparatory to the engraving in Jean-Marie Crozet's "Nouveau voyage a la Mer du Sud commence sous les ordres de M Marion" (1783). The drawing is numbered Plate 5 as it appears in the publication. The image is the same way around as the resulting engraving. Accompanying folded blue light card, inscribed "Marion"; "Ensemble de 7 dessin[s]: Oceanie" Date thought to be close to date of original drawing, and possibly before the publication of Crozet's book in 1783. These drawings appear to be copies by an unknown hand of the original drawings by an unknown artist on Marion Dufresne's voyage, 1772. The drawings are numbered Plates 2 to 6, as they appear in the publication. Plates 1 and 7 were transferred to the Cartographic Archive. The images are the same way around as the resulting engravings, published in 1783. The vessel has a trangular woven sail. There is an island close in the left background and a canoe and sailing boat in the right background. Date taken from the Library's copy of this volume, but there may also have been a 1797 edition from which this loose copy may have come. Description: A standing portrait of the back view of Tacouri (a Te Hikutuu chief, aka Te Kauri, Tacoury), a tattooed man, wearing feathers in his hair, and holding a blanket or cloak in front of him. The tattooing is on the buttocks and legs. (Identified in Anne Salmond's "Two worlds" (1991), page 373). This drawing appears to be a copy by an unknown hand of the original drawings by an unknown artist on Marion Dufresne's voyage, 1772 (it also bears similarities to a drawing of Ranginui, a Ngapuhi chief, with tattooed buttock, by Pottier de L'Orme, on de Surville's 1769 voyage). Description: Shows three figures, one bearded man holding a poised spear and a short stick with a star-shaped end. His genitals are tied up in cloth strips attached to his belt. At the right a woman in a short skirt, with earrings and short hair, begins to flee, while a man in a tall cylindrical hat is seated on the ground beside one of two small circular domed thatched buildings. The man with weapons is based on a figure with a slightly different pose but the same weapons, in Hodges' "The landing at Tanna, one of the New Hebrides". The woman and the seated man are taken from Hodges' "Woman of New Caledonia" and Man of New Caledonia". The houses are taken from New Caledonian scenes by Hodges. From an unknown Italian publication. Description: Aquatint based on a drawing of Te Puta o te Paretauhinau Pa at Mercury Bay, Coromandel Peninsula. The drawing of the pa is by Herman Diedrich Sporing, Sir Joseph Banks' clerk; the canoe is copied from a drawing by Sydney Parkinson, the official artist aboard the Endeavour. The scene shows a long war canoe in the left foreground; an arched rock in the water behind the boat with a pa on top of it; two canoes pulled up on the bank to the right behind the arched rock and dense bush in the background. From an unknown Italian publication. One of the engravers of this publication was Biasioli (1790-1830). The pa shown was seen in November 1769. See Joppien & Smith.
