Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Description: Typed transcript of diary written by Henry Halse covering period 24 April to May 8 [1874?]. Diary entries describe Halse's journey from Ohinemutu, across Lake Tarawera and Lake Rotomahana to see the Pink and White Terraces and Lake Rotokanapa (?) and then back to Ohinemutu, Taupo, Napier and back to Wellington. Entries mainly note physical aspects of the scenery, comment on the places Halse stayed, baths taken and other such points but also notes meeting Sir James Ferguson and James Mackay Jr at Ohinemutu and attending a hui there on April 29 which discussed halting of land sales. He also mentions that the Bishop of Waiapu and Archdeacon Williams were on the same boat on the voyage from Napier to Wellington. Also contains some biographical notes on Henry Halse, his family, some of the other people mentioned in the diary and notes the fate of the Terraces and some of the other places visited. Description: Journal kept by Hunter while travelling from England to New Zealand on the `Rangitata' and his return to England on the `Makura' to Australia and the Orsova' from Sydney from 23 Oct 1931 to 26 Apr 1932. He travelled with Ena Hunter. He describes their preparations, embarkation at Southampton, the other passengers, food (including menus), sea sickness, entertainments, the comforts and otherwise of the ship, his cabin, their passage through the Panama Canal and Armstice Day. They disembarked at Wellington 24 Nov 1931, and left for Australia on the `Makura' 7 Mar 1932, and for England on the `Orsova' from Sydney, 13 Mar 1932. In New Zealand Hunter spent time in Wellington, visiting the Alexander Turnbull Library, describing the work of the League of Nations Union in Wellington, visits Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson where he spent some time, Wanganui, the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Auckland and back through Taranaki where he climbed Mt Egmont; he visited farms and factories, observed the opening of Parliament (24 Feb 1932) and visited the Gear Freezing and Meat Preservation Company. He attended many church services in various churches including the Congregational, Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. Folowing his and Ena's departure for Sydney he describes the new Sydney harbour bridge, their visit to Tasmania and the House of Commons in Hobart, visiting to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Colombo, the Suez Canal, Naples and Gibraltar, and an ANZAC commemoration service he declined to attend. The journal is illustrated and includes a water colour of the `Rangitata', newspaper clippings of portraits of various New Zealanders; and a copy of a letter from the Turnbull to the donor (1986).
