Description: Folder comprises a handwritten letter from Lawrence (28 Percy Avenue, Kingsgate, Broadstairs, Kent) to Mansfield (Chaucer Mansions, Barons Court). The two page letter begins "I hope you found my book at your new address" [The book is possibly `Sons and Lovers']. Lawrence invites Mansfield down to Kent for the weekend then asks her to act as the go-between in Frieda Weekley's attempts to see her son Montague Weekley. He continues and offers "to get a little flat for you in Bavaria, for a month". A pencilled postscript has been crosshatched on the reverse of the letter and refers to the gift of half a sovereign to Montague Weekley. Accompanying the letter is a typed description of the letter prepared for sale by Michael Silverman. Typescripts are annotated in an unknown hand and are accompanied by a note reading `Sent to E W Tedlock Jnr' from the English Department at the University of New Mexico. Letters include reminiscence of her relationships with both Murry and D H Lawrence and reflections on Murry and Katherine Mansfield's relationship and Lawrence's homosexuality. She describes life in Taos, New Mexico, and comments on Murry's life back in England and his writing, including 'Community Farm', 'Between Two Worlds', and his biography of Jonathan Swift. Description: One original and numerous transcribed letters written to Frieda Lawrence by John Middleton Murry during 1946-1956. Also correspondence exchanged with Angelo Ravagli after Frieda's death in 1956. Correspondence with Frieda concerns reminiscences of time spent in the 1920s, including their menage a quarte and Murry's own love for Frieda and their trip to Germany together. Murry describes the intervening years: his marriage with Elizabeth Cockbayne 'Betty' and his subsequent marriage to Mary Gamble and their life at Lodge Farm in Norfolk, his own children and grandchildren, suffering from Buerger's disease, travel to the south of France, and croquet. The letters also discuss D H Lawrence and Frieda's relationship, Lawrence's influence on Murry (both personal and literary), biographies of Lawrence (both Leavis and Moore's), Dylan Thomas's death, Murry's book 'Love, Freedom and Society', and Murry and Mary possibly visiting Frieda in America.
