Second Christian King of Tonga. Great grandson of George Tupou I of Tonga (1797?-1893). Father was Prince Tu'i Pelehaka (Fatafehi Toutaitokotaha) (1842-1912), whose mother Salote Mafile'o Pilolevu was a daughter of Tupou I. Mother was Princess Fusipala Tauki'onetuku (1850-1889), a daughter of Tevita 'Ungamotangitau (Tevita 'Unga) who was a son of Tupou I. Reigned from 1893 to 1918. Father of Queen Salote of Tonga.

In all fifteen islands were visited, eight of them being within the extended boundaries of New Zealand, and the remaining seven belonging to one or other of the adjacent groups - viz., Samoa, Tonga or Friendly Islands, and Fiji.
