Laira (Ship : 1870- )

Iron barque of 492 tons, built in Sunderland in 1870. See Lloyd's Register (1889-1890). Chartered by Shaw, Savill Co., later owned by Stone Bros., Auckland, and subsequently chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Co. On 2 April 1898 the Union Steam Ship Co. ship SS Wakatipu ran into the Laira when she was lying alongside Dunedin wharf. The Laira sank in 6 minutes. She was refloated, reconditioned and again entered the inter-colonial trade.
