Description: Unbound pages from two photograph albums, with images relating to the Presbyterian mission in the Whakatane District, taken circa 1920s by unidentified photographers. The images show a wide variety of identified scenes, groups, buildings and events including: - opening day of the school at Matahi. - rallys of Maori mission workers in 1921, 1923, 1924. - local Maori people. - mission hospital at Nuhaka. - portrait of Rua Kenana and Rev John George Laughton. - mission house at Matahi. Accompanying information - Five photocopied pages, provided by Binney, with the note "From Rev Fletcher's collection. Description: Black and white photographic prints, taken at an event relating to (probably the launch of) the book 'Mihaia: the prophet Rua Kenana and his community at Maungapohatu' by Binney, Gillian Chaplin and Craig Wallace, at an unidentified location in November 1979. One image taken by The Bay of Plenty Times. Others taken by an unidentified photographer. The images show people at an indoor gathering. Te Akakura Rua features in many of them, wearing her mother's greenstone brooch. Also features Binney, Gillian Chaplin, Tom Collins, Dr Ranginui Walker, Dick Scott, Greer Twiss, and possibly Elizabeth Mountain. Includes portraits of people associated with Rua and the trial, and most of the photographs were taken outside the Supreme Court. Photographer unidentified, except for a two-part panorama of Maungapohatu Pa, probably taken by Percy R Wilkinson, a surveyor sent in by the police to gather evidence for them A label at the back of the album advertises Walter Suckling (as the publisher?) It is understood that a number of similar photograph albums of the trial were created. Rua Kenana was accused of using seditious language, counselling others to murder or disable the police, and resisting arrest. Description: Contains diary entries by Keys re his travels through the Bay of Plenty and Horowhenua districts on business as a Native Land Agent; there are detailed descriptions of the countryside and towns which Keys travelled through, and discussions about the people he met; there are also discussions about Maori practices and customs that he encountered and his impressions of them. There are also notes about native flora and fauna and the liquor trade, and a number of photographs of people (mainly from Te Arawa and Ngati Raukawa), scenery and marae, taken by Keys according to the text (each is dated). Also contains copies of various manuscripts (in Maori) submitted to Keys by Maori informants, and information about the history of Rangiatea at Otaki Also includes stories, written in Maori, from the Ngati Raukawa tribe; "The story of Uenuku-kopako and Kapu- Manawawhiti"; "The death of Tukemata"; and a copy of a letter from Riapo Puhipi (Leopold Busby) about an exchange of gifts between Te Rauparaha and Poroa, a chief of Ahipara. Includes photographs of the old Otaki school house; Kahurangi Taipua; Raukawa meeting house (all on p.73), and Tungia Te Ao (pp.74 & 100).
