Te Waipunaahau, Metapere, -1853

Wai-punahau, Metapere, -1853

Ngati Toa woman of mana. Mother of Wi Parata Te Kakakura and Hemi Matenga, Metapere lived at Kapiti Island, Motungarara and Waikanae. Te Waipunaahau was named after her paternal grandmother of the Ngati Hinetuhi and Ngati Mutunga tribes. Metapere, or Mehetabel, was her baptismal name taken from the Old Testament. Metapere married George Stubbs, a whaler to whom she had two sons. She later married the Ngati Toa chief Natanahira Te Umutapu (son of Te Rako). She was chosen to escort Wi Kingi Te Rangitake and several hundred other Te Ati Awa from Waikanae to Taranaki in 1848. Prior to this migration all the chiefs of Te Ati Awa ceremonially returned the Waikanae lands to Metapere. She later fixed the boundaries of this land between the remaining Te Ati Awa and Ngati Raukawa. (Dictionary of New Zealand biography Vol 1 M35). She died at Kapiti Island aged approximately 60 years.
