Description: An oral history project concerning Rangiatea, the Māori Anglican Church at Otaki. Comprises interviews in which John Moffat, Netty Wilson, Tahiwi (Buster) Carkeek, Louise Carkeek, Hira Royal, Mere Kena, Andre Baker, Hohipuha Cook, Paddy Rikihanal, and Marie Hakaraia discuss the history of Rangiatea, the burning down of the church in 1995, and the rebuild project. Topics include the vestry, various ministers, church experiences, the extent of the pastorate, the Church's early history, the return of local soldiers from World War II, the opening of Te Wananga o Raukawa, kaumatua, Carkeek family history, issues about rebuilding and the significance of rebuilding the Church, traditional Maori beliefs versus Christianity, Te Rauparaha and Christianity, the Anglican Church, the interaction of Ngati Toa and Ngati Raukawa with government and the loss of land. A joint oral history project by Te Wananga o Raukawa and Te Roopu Whakahaere o Rangiatea. Funded by an Oral History grant from the Department of Internal Affairs. Rangiatea Church at Otaki was built between 1844 and 1851 under the guidance of Te Rauparaha and missionary Octavius Hadfield. It was the oldest Maori Anglican church in New Zealand until it was burnt down in 1995 by an arsonist. A replica of the church building was opened in 2003, which houses some of the treasures salvaged from the original church building. Description: Colour slide photographs taken by John Reinder Fijn circa 1960s. One photographs shows a bridal couple and guests waiting outside a church or wharenui (probably taken at Iritekura Marae, Waipiro Bay, circa 1960s). Ten photographs depict: a Roman Catholic bishop wearing a mitre with a clergyman outside a wharenui or church as people watch; a kuia smiling, a teenage Māori girl and toddlers standing by a fence; Māori kuia wearing headscarves, a Māori men butchering sides of meat on a trestle table, in a park near state houses; three Māori carvings, and the statue at St Faith's Church, Ohinemutu, Rotorua. Nine photographs depict: pallisade, fences, buildings, and wharenui at the Whakarewarewa model village. Three photographs depict: a view over geothermal steam at Ohinemutu, the spire of St Faiths Church in distance; and two kuia washing clothes in a concrete bath of steaming geothermal hot water. Description: Colour slide photographs taken by John Reinder Fijn circa 1960s. Seven photographs depict a kapa haka roopu demonstrating poi taken at Whakarewarewa Pā circa 1960s, including women performing a seated poi on grass, the roopu in front of a wharenui, and standing on a geothermal area. Three photographs depict: a carved figure with a open mouth at Ohinemutu village, a tekoteko, and a kuia standing beside a carved figure on a wharenui porch (slide mount annotated as "Rotorua"). Four photographs depict; the Māori Jesus and Mary figures in the stained glass windows by Dutch artist Martin Roestenburg (1909–1966), and candles, inside the Church of St. Werenfried, Lake Taupo. Two photographs depict: three men with a rowboat on the shore of a lake or sea, near a row of baches, and a farmer on horseback mustering sheep along a lake shore (probably at Lake Tutira taken circa 1960s). One photographs shows a young Māori girl at a roadside fruit stall; and two photographs show young Māori girls swimming and playing on a sand hill. Four photographs depict: a group of young Māori boys playing in small canoes (one canoe is named 'Kontitki') at the sea, and a group of Pakeha and Māori boys swimming nude (probably taken at Waipiro Bay circa 1960s). The album was given to Grace Leitch Johnston (later the wife of Presbyterian minister Rev P Gladstone Hughes) by 'E E W' (probably Elsie E Webber, later Mrs Elsie E Little) at 'Xmas 1920'. The images chiefly show unidentified Maori children (probably the pupils of the schools set up by the mission) but also people probably working for, or visiting, the mission. Four images include Presbyterian missionary John George Laughton. One shows him with the prophet Rua Kenana. Also images of a large unidentified hui and a church.
