Maclennan, Stewart, 1903-1973

Artist, art gallery director, born Dunedin. Son of John Maclennan (1870-1911). Studied at School of Art, Dunedin, and Royal College of Art, London, 1935-1939. Married fellow art student Dorothy Kathleen Kenwright (1915-1996) in London, 3 September 1939. They travelled out to New Zealand in convoy, the same year. Taught art at Wairarapa College during the war years. Four children were born to the couple. Director of the National Art Gallery, 1947-1968. Painter and print-maker, including lithographs.
