Description: Album containing 1928 souvenir booklet celebrating New Zealand's first Commerce Train, which travelled through Auckland Province between 26th October 1928 and 4th November 1928. Souvenir number of the Commerce Train News, published by New Zealand Railways. Bound in with the book are photographs taken by an unidentified passenger on the trip. There are photographs in the booklet, which include several portraits of men on the trip, photographs of farmland, dairy factories, cement works, Arapuni Hydroelectric works showing the dam and the spillway, kauri forests, trains and cars, and group photographs of the personnel. Full lists of personnel are included in the book. Other - Photographs possibly taken by Robert Angus, manager of Cook & Son, Shortland St., Auckland, who was a member of the tour. Godber album 10

Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, relating to his family, his work and his interests. Family photographs include portraits of his wife (Laura) and two children (William and Phyllis), and scenes of their home in Whiteman's Valley Road, Silverstream; views of the Hutt Valley including large numbers of cars travelling to Trentham Racecourse, and the Hutt River. Another group of images relate to a holiday at the Mendip Hills Homestead in Canterbury, with scenes of farm life, including haymaking, merino sheep, and farm buildings. During their stay in the South Island Godber also took photographs of Dunedin (including the Ross Reservoir, Otago Boys' High School, Seacliff Mental Hospital, the 1926 Dunedin Exhibition, and the Hillside Railway Workshops); Invercargill (including the Invercargill Railway Workshops); Stewart Island, Moeraki, Tuatapere, Waiau River, Oamaru and Port Chalmers. Various railway stations in Canterbury and Otago, the Burnside Iron Mills, and the Rosslyn Mills. Godber was a volunteer fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade with the album including views of the building, groups of firemen, fire engines and other fire fighting equipment, and a building in Petone damaged by fire. In his work with New Zealand Railways, mainly at the Petone Railway Workshops, he took interior photographs of various buildings, including the Machine Shop and finishing benches, the engine room, lathes, boilers, and fitting shops. He also took photographs of many of the steam engines that were built and worked on at the workshops. One scene shows a group of men watching a fight. Many images show his interest in logging railways, particularly in the Piha, Karekare, Anawhata area. Scenes of logging camps, various methods of transporting logs including bullock teams, logging trains, and dams created and then tripped to send logs down by river, and timber mills. Other topics covered in Godber's photographs are scenes at Maori marae and meeting houses, with some of the people identified; Maori carving and rafter designs; beekeeping, and gold mining. Description: Transparencies of houses in New Zealand, taken by Geoffrey Thornton or Jocelyn Thornton. Each slide mount is annotated with the name or brief description, and/or the location, of the house. Dates and photographer name are sometimes annotated. Includes dairy workers' cottages at Mangawhare, Dargaville and a gumdigger's hut also at Dargaville. Title supplied by Library. Slides are not dated. Arrangement: Transparencies were arranged in a 6-row, 50 slides per row, plastic case labelled 'North Island Houses'. The arrangement was by location of house, approximately from North to South. Quantity: 24 colour original transparency/ies. Physical Description: Colour transparencies in plastic and cardboard slide mounts. Processing information: Slides have been removed from container and put into archival pockets, following the original order, from left to right and top to bottom.

Description: Photographic prints of concrete buildings and structures in the North and South Islands of New Zealand, taken by Geoffrey or Jocelyn Thornton 1965 to 1990s. Some prints are labelled on the reverse; some have been marked up as if for publication. There are often several images of the same building or structure from different perspectives. Includes photographs of commercial and residential buildings, bridges, retaining walls, dams, and structures such as mine cyanide tanks, water towers, and gun emplacements. Date range is taken from the few dates annotated on the back of prints or on negative enclosures. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Prints were together with negatives in labelled glassine bags, arranged in largely alphabetical order by name of farm or station, in a small wooden drawer. Bags were labelled with the farm or station name and type of building on the left-hand side of the bag and the location on the right-hand side.
