Sutherland, Allan, 1900-1967

Hansard reporter, editor of `Parliamentary Debates', 1957-1962 and numismaticist (Fuller details in WWNZ 8th ed). In 1941 he sent Joseph Heenan a complimentary copy of his `Numismatic history of New Zealand'. At the time he was with the Patriotic Purposes Branch, Dept of Internal Affairs.

Description: Photographs of early Auckland and Wellington debentures from 1845. The wording on the notes is of the form "On presentation of five of these notes We promise to pay the Bearer the sum of Five Shillings in Government Debentures". The companies issuing them are R & D Graham, J & H MacFarlane, Crosbie, Aurora Tavern, James Smith & Co, P Murch baker, A Hesse, and the Colonial Treasurer. Includes a presumably humourous one in which the bearer promised to pay in Antipodean Ginger Beer. Arrangement: Negatives at 1/2-002595 to 002604 and 002997 Quantity: 11 b&w copy negative(s).
