Born Scotland. Teacher in architecture at Wellington Technical School 1895. Also practising as an architect in chambers at Grey Street, Wellington by 1897. In 1898 he joined Robert Roy McGregor in partnership as McKay & MacGregor; in 1901 the firm became known as Crichton & McKay when he joined William Crichton in partnership. Their premises were still in Grey Street, Wellington. His work is followed with the letters A. R. V. I. A. He died in Sydney in 1944.
