Griffin, Arthur R fl 1900s :Free Public Library to be erected at Hokitika May 22nd 1906

Description: Foundation, roof and ceiling plans, section through steps and pilaster and corner of wall. The Free Public Library was built after a competition run in 1905. It was funded by the American steel magnate, Andrew Carnegie. The building has survived (at least to the 1990s) although its roof and all decoration from the eaves-line upwards were stripped off, as earthquake risks, in 1952. The contractor was William Arnott. The building was built somewhat smaller than the plan, hence the measurements written over the plan and details of modifications attached to the plan.
