Carver, Prue, active 2021: Photographs of Gilmer-Herbert wedding reception at Fern Glen...

Date: 10 February 1906

By: Carver, Prudence, active 2021; Isaacs, Jacob Nathan, 1877-1962

Reference: PAColl-10772

Description: Comprises two photographs taken 10 February 1906 by J N Isaacs of the wedding reception of Florence Elizabeth Gilmer and Dr William Edward Herbert, held at ‘Fern Glen’ on The Terrace, Wellington. The first photograph shows bridesmaids Miss May Seddon, Miss Vera Macdonald, Miss Alice McClatchie, and Miss Berta Greenfield dressed in taffeta gowns with full-gathered skirts, and hats decorated with taffeta and roses. They hold bridal bouquets and stand on the steps at the entrance to ‘Fern Glen’. Inscription on mount verso reads “Aunt Florrie’s wedding group 1906 | Outside Fern Glen | 186 The Terrace | Outside left is my mother Elizabeth May Seddon | ? Bride is one with different hat”. [This last statement is incorrect as the bride is not pictured, and is described in a Free Lance article as wearing a different style of dress.] The second photograph shows wedding guests, including the wedding party, standing in the gardens at ‘Fern Glen’ where the wedding reception was held. Premier Seddon is pictured front-centre of the image. Other wedding guests included Sir Joseph Ward and Dr Kington Fyffe. It is unclear whether the bride and groom are pictured in the portrait of the guests. Inscription on mount verso reads “Feb 1906 | Aunt Florrie’s wedding guests down in Fern Glen garden”. An account of the wedding is described in the Free Lance, Volume VI, Issue 293, 10 February 1906, Page 8, https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZFL19060210.2.8 Title supplied by Library. Inscriptions: Mount recto - bottom right - "J. N. Isaacs" The Gilmer-Herbert wedding ceremony was held at St Peter’s Church, after which a reception was held at ‘Fern Glen’, the residence of the bride’s parents, on The Terrace, Wellington. Quantity: 2 b&w original photographic print(s) (mounted). Physical Description: Black and white original photographic print mounted on card 46 x 35.5 cm. Provenance: Donor was the granddaughter of William and Florence Herbert and was given the photographs by her mother, Margaret Levin. Processing information: Not all names associated with the collection have been indexed.
