Trans-Antarctic Expedition

Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958)

An overland crossing of Antarctica, via the South Pole, headed by Sir Vivian Fuchs with Sir Edmund Hillary leading the Ross Sea support team. As it was a private venture, an incorporated society, 'Trans-Antarctic Expedition New Zealand (Incorporated)' was formed to support the expedition. This was disolved in 1962 (Source, NZ Gazette). Government support was also received.

Description: Scrapbooks include magazine clippings (text and photos) about the expedition to Antarctica 1956-1958), with share certificates signed by George Lowe and Sir Edmund Hillary (Certificates now at Eph-B-ANTARCTICA-1956). Scrapbook number one shows a clipping portrait of Sir Edmund Hillary stuck to the cover. Scrapbook number two has within it a cut-away illustration of the Antarctic expedition supply ship, the "Theron". The donor's father, Mr George Gilltrap, was a tractor dealer in Rotorua, and was involved in fundraising for the Antartic expedition. He also ran a vintage car museum in Rotorua in the 1950s. Description: Collection comprises scrapbooks, newspaper cuttings, certificates, ephemera and photographs relating to Nolan's career as an Able Seaman in the New Zealand Navy. A large percent of the items detail the 1955-1958 Trans-Antartic Expedition and the New Zealand Ross Sea Support team, led by Sir Edmund Hillary. Also includes some family related material including telegrams and newspaper articles relating to Ann Nolan. Source of title - Supplied by Library Nolan joined the Navy at fifteen years of age. His first placement was aboard the `HMNZS Tamaki'. He served aboard three other vessels before joining the advance party flown to England to serve aboard the `HMNZS Endeavour', supply ship for the Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1956.
