Graphic artist, lithographer and draughtsman, employed by Brett Printing Co circa 1900. He was the son of John Diedrich Schmidt (1839-1925) who was head lithographer and engraver for the Brett Printing Company for about 30 years. William was the brother of painter Armin Schmidt (1886-1956), and photographers Herman John Schmidt (1872-1959) and Samuel Bernhard Schmidt (1875-1942).

Description: Shows a dairy farm and outbuildings on rolling country, with stands of native bush in the foreground and middle distance. A stream flows across the foreground from a waterfall at the right where a man fishes with a rod. A group of Maori on horseback pause on the bank of the stream. A little further off, stockmen on horseback drive a herd of cattle, and cattle and sheep graze further off in front of the homestead. The roofs of the outbuildings are of corrugated iron. Tree ferns, rata and nikau are scattered through the bush. In the right distance Mt Taranaki is visible. See complete copy at D-009-025. Description: Invitation shows four vignettes (of Wellington Harbour, Lyttelton Harbour, Auckland Harbour, and Port Chalmers Harbour), inset portraits of Their Majesties, and figures of a European soldier and a Maori chief. Each differs slightly, one having been printed with slightly larger, heavier dots of colour, giving a darker overall effect (easily studied through a strong magnifying glass).
