Retired soldier (Captain) of Indian Army. Arrived in New Plymouth on the 'Amelia Thompson' in 1841 with son Henry. Settled in New Plymouth for a period before returning to England. Died in Clifton, England in 1872.

Description: Handwritten and typed reminiscences, recorded between 1923 and 1926, and in 1973, of the reminiscences of Henry Davy and his grandson, Ernest Cecil Davy. Henry Davy's reminscences are mainly of his service with Patea Mounted Rifles in Taranaki and Waikato during the New Zealand Wars. Those of Ernest Cecil Davy give a a detailed and vivid account of his life as a casual worker, sharemilker and timber worker in Victoria, New South Wales and New Zealand; and include his war service with the 18th Reinforcements in World War I on the Western Front, where he was wounded. Also included are general notes on the Davy family, drawn up, apparently, by Ernest Davy. Source of title - Supplied by Library Quantity: 2 folder(s). 0.02 Linear Metres. Physical Description: Mss, typescript (Photocopy) Provenance: Photocopy given to the donor by Jim McCallum, a retired prison superintendant, in Sydney NSW, who had in turn been given the photocopy ca 1980 by an unknown trainee prison guard. The donor recopied the documents and sent copies to the Auckland Central Library, the Waikato University, Puke Ariki and the Alexander Turnbull Library. Description: The second and central section of a three part panoramic view of New Plymouth, shortly after its establishment as a New Zealand Company settlement. Shows the front garden of John and Emma Wicksteed, a street crossing the foreground, with cows being herded and a bullock cart, several houses and a hotel and Mount Taranaki. The features indicated are "native pa, now removed. King's Arms Inn. Messrs Hoskin & Carter['s houses]. Captain Davy. Marsland Hill. Mr Veale. Mr Oxenham. Chapel. Club house (Mr Fishley). Mr Rundell". The accompanying text reads: The spectator stands with his back to the sea, in the garden of the [New Zealand or Plymouth] Company's agent. There is only an open Roadstead [Harbour] here, and the colonists are essentially agricultural. Surf-boats, however, and excellent moorings, provided by the Company, facilitate the landing of passengers and goods. Mount Egmont is distant about fifteen miles. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s).
