Description: Album recording a motoring and camping holiday through the South Island of New Zealand. This took in the New Zealand South Seas Exhibition in Dunedin and included the West Coast, Otago, and Canterbury. The central part of the album has images of Khandallah, Wellington, and the family home in that suburb. Family photographs include Doug on his Norton Motorcycle, and Jack and Neville similarly posed on a Douglas Motorcycle. Rene and Frank stand at the net holding tennis rackets, and mother has several images with young Joyce. The last part of the album recordes something of a holiday to Auckland where the family camped at Brown's Bay and took a trip to Kawau Island. Two photographs of the pavilions of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition at night, one showing the lights reflected in the ornamental lake in front of the Grand Dome; one of the front entrance to the exhibition area with a tram and cars passing; one showing more of the frontage of the exhibition area including advertising; and one negative with two images of panoramas of the whole site. Compiler of albums, and photographer(s), are unidentified. Album is extensively captioned. - Images of Dunedin area are taken during a holiday to the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition in 1924-1925. Photographs of sights include a bus trip to Waipori via Outram (including the Waipori River and power station), St Clair Beach (including the Baths and Tomahawk), waves at Ocean Beach, Dunedin Botanic Gardens, Portobello, Harbour Ferry, Octagon and Cathedral, Dunedin Train Station, Stewart Street Cable Car, Otago University Clock Tower, Otago Boys High, Evansdale river scenes, and North East Valley. Exhibition photos show the Exhibition Buildings, the grand court water feature, 'Maori House', and Amusement Park 'The Three Castles' (including the entrance and the 'Ye Old Mill River Caves' roller coaster and 'Giant's Mouth' rides). - Album also covers a January 1928 North Island road trip in a Model T Ford, departing from Levin. Camping grounds, camping sites, the preparation of meals and washing up, car with camping awning erected and camping gear packed on side, picnics, and tourist sites are featured. The route travelled, as suggested by the order of the images, is via Hastings, Napier, Taupo and lake area, Wairakei thermal area, Rotorua and Ohinemutu and lake area (including Rotoiti, Tarawera, and Rotomahana), Hamilton, Auckland (including Titirangi, Henderson, and Devonport), Waitomo, New Plymouth, and Inglewood. Notable sights and activities photographed include: Hastings Garden entrance with Maori carvings; Taurangakuma River; Mohaka River; Lake Taupo scenes from boat tour; Huka Falls; Aratiatia Rapids; various thermal sights including the Opal Pool and Eagles Nest Geyser at Wairakei; Whakarewarewa thermal area with model pa, tour group, and children diving for pennies; Boiling Lake and other sights in Waimangu Valley; Rotorua Sanatorium including Bath House and entrance to Government Gardens; Okere Falls; Hinemoana's Bath; fish at Fairy Spring; hunting for oysters, Titirangi; Albert Park, Auckland; polar bears at Auckland Zoo; tourist series of Waitomo Caves; Mokau bridge; Pukekura Park and Paritutu Rock, New Plymouth; and an unidentified house and tennis match. - Album contains portraits of two children called Joyce and Beverley. Joyce is also photographed at the South Seas Exhibition with a woman identified only as 'B.G.K' [Miss B G Kirk?]. The North Island Road trip images include numerous image of three unidentified women; this series also includes a family portrait of the Bailey Family beside a car. - Loose prints show Whitianga (Mercury Bay and Buffalo Beach), an unidentified group by pool of fish [Fairy Spring, Rotorua?], a print with two images (Ball Hut and Lake Pukaki), and an unidentified city scape [Dunedin?]. Some images are annotated with names, dates and scene descriptions. Taken by photographers Wrigglesworth and Binns, Peter Pan Studios (Wellington), and unidentified photographer(s) between circa 1912 and circa 1925. - Images chiefly show family and friends at home and on holiday, and participating in various recreational activities, cricket, tennis, boating, swimming, and visits to the zoo, deer park and seaside. Also includes wedding scenes and adults and children with household pets and horses. Includes women in 1900s and 1920s fashions, wearing fur coats, cloche hats and carrying parasols. - Identifiable images include: the Hydro Grand Hotel, Timaru; the gravestone of Elizabeth, wife of Robert A Lilley (died 30 Nov 1925); and New Plymouth city and Pukekura Park. Description: A photograph album given to Vera Nicol at Christmas 1925 by "Dorrie", which contains commercial and amateur photographs taken by unknown photographers between 1925 and the 1930s. Some photographs are identified; many are not. Includes family photographs, possibly at home in Marton as well as on family trips to Rotorua and Castlecliff. Also includes many photographs of scenery at Marton, New Plymouth, Rotorua, Rotoma, Castlecliff, Dunedin, Oamaru, Taranaki, Auckland, Cambridge, Coromandel, and Tauranga. Includes scenes of the University of Auckland Clocktower Building, Auckland Zoo, and Oamaru Gardens. Includes three photographs taken in India, possibly sent to Vera by Grace and Alice Clemance, who are pictured in one photograph. There are also photographs of a Presbyterian Bible Class Conference in Oamaru in 1926-1927, the Dunedin Exhibition 1925-1926, a scene of several of Nicol family members and others wearing feather cloaks and standing at the front of a painted, carved whare (possibly near Rotorua or Rotoma), and scenes from the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York in 1927 (likely commercial photographs). Some photographs have been torn out. Two prints from the album are also in another group of Nicol family photographs. A group photograph at the Bible Class Conference is at PAColl-10552-2-9 and a print of a family picnic is at PAColl-10552-2-5.
