Description: A set of vignettes concerning current political and social matters in Christchurch and beyond. 'Music hath charms' shows the Salvation Army band 'leading a mutiny against the City Council' while they play loudly outside the Christchurch City Council buildings. A drunk man, seen in Dunedin, carries a large sandwich board 'Prohibition a blunder'. A cricket player getting bowled relates to 'South African cricketers' against the Australians in their 5th test. A London professor snoozes under a tree, after stating that 'the sun could do all world's work'. Two small boys, one with an executioner's axe, his dead parents behind him, discuss the murder of the parents after his mother refused to give him a penny to buy lollies. Relates to a newspaper account of a boy in Dunedin reacting violently to strict parents, including his trying to hang himself. A self portrait shows Low sobbing into his handkerchief, while he draws Tommy Taylor, but regrets the ending of the political life of Joseph Ward and William Massey for caricature purposes. Councillor Thacker pulling up a tree from Cathedral Square in the process of transplanting it rather that cutting it down. A confrontation between Britain and Kaiser Bill is about importing goods between the two countries. Description: Programme for a variety concert probably held in Apia, featuring performers of the Samoa Expeditionary Force, including Pvt L P Leary, Gunner G M Silver, Pvt G P Hanna, Gunner C Freyberg, Pvt Cliff Baker, and others (Chapman, Robert Vial, Neill, Wickson, Bark, Wakelin, Watson, Pierard, Orman, Kirby, Smith, Turnbull, Dodgson, Walker, Jesson, Saxon, Pearce, Griffin, Thompson, John Fuller, A E Sodder, Cole). Part 1 was a miscellany of song, recitation and dance, and Part 2 was a three-act farce titled: "The snaring of Samoa", or "Don't kill the lizard". The cast is listed as is a synopsis of scenery (the setting is Apia, Samoa) The back cover shows a hand-drawn caricature of a German, possibly Kaiser Bill. Description: Comprises a small publication 'Irish Ballads and Songs' selected by Martin MacDermott, [1890?], and loose papers that were laid in to this incomplete volume, including correspondence, clippings, research papers, and postcards. The material in this folder was enclosed in a bag labelled by James Cowan's family as 'James Cowan Favourite Poetry'. The loose papers include holograph notes and clippings about Irish legends and poetry. Includes a draft article '"Meinself und Gott": When the Kaiser was in Flower' by James Cowan, dated 1941, which includes comical verses and ditties relating to the late Kaiser Wilhelm II. The correspondence includes a letter to James Cowan from his brother Henry Cowan, dated 16 September 1917, on "Y. M. C. A. with the Australian Imperial Force" letterhead, written from Pennings Camp, Tidworth, Salisbury Plains. This includes a small photographic print, possibly of Henry, in military uniform that was laid in the letter. Other correspondence includes a letter from Christian Keig, dated 18 November 1917, from the Isle of Man, which refers to Henry Cowan's visit to see them; three other letters from family members from Ellerslie (Annie and Willie), dated between 1927 and 1930; and a letter from Johannes Andersen in his role as the Librarian at the Alexander Turnbull Library, dated 26 August 1931. Cowan had marked this letter in pencil and used the back of it to write some song lyrics for "A Toast to Dear Old Erin" and "Tim [?] the Fluter's Ball". Also includes papers relating to the death of Agnes Margaret Cowan in 1930, and a mourning card from Mrs W. A. Cowan and family of Stanley Point, dated 14 November 1913. Also six postcards, three of which are original photographic prints relating to the Cowan family. One of the postcards is from James Cowan's brother Henry, dated 22 December 1909, writing from Stanley Point, and features a wooden villa, which Henry describes as his house. The other postcards feature images of a bearded man sitting in a chair, with a baby on his lap; a view of Stanley Point; the Katesbridge Presbyterian Church; "Our Late Premier, Rt. Hon. R. J. Seddon, P. C."; and "Killarney. Turnpike Rocks Gap of Dunloe". Two photographic prints. One of a family group portrait with an unidentified elderly woman with two other women and two girls; and one of the elderly woman seated alone, with trees in the background circa 1920s. The bag also contained the references 'D2' and 1 Cat (the '1' was circled). Which may refer to the Divan Drawer location where they were stored, and the numbering of the catalogue list that Margaret Cowan created for the collection.
