Preparatory school for boys started by Gladys Sommerville in 1907, at 81 Hill Street, Thorndon, Wellington. It became so successful that she moved to larger premises at Days Bay House in Eastbourne, in 1914, changing the character of the school from a day school to a boarding school. After she left, and with a downturn in the economy, in 1940 the school was taken over by Wellesley College.

By: Hunter, Greta (Lady), 1886-1978; Ryan, Paul, active 1992
Reference: PA1-o-778
Description: This album belonged to and was put together by Greta Ewen. At the time she worked as a member of the nursing Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) at the military convalescent hospital set up at Lowry Bay in Sir Francis Bell's house "Taumaru". The album is a fairly diverse documentary of nursing staff and patients, most of whom have some degree of identification. Most of the photographs record the daily life and activities of the hospital. In particular it shows the informal interaction between nurses and soldiers. There is a cricket match between the hospital and pupils of nearby Croydon school, games of tennis and golf, picnics, outdoor lunches, motor outings, net fishing and boating expeditions. Soldiers are shown doing motor repairs and small building projects and the nurses cooking and cleaning. Obviously one of the main jobs of the VAD in this situation was to keep the men occupied and entertained Greta Ewen married the pioneer of state dental services in New Zealand, Colonel Sir Thomas Anderson Hunter in 1927. The album contains several photographs of their house "Wharerua" in Lowry Bay, Lower Hutt. Item previously titled after the donor Paul Ryan, changed to Greta Hunter on 26 May 2015 Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Provenance: The album was given to Paul Ryan's grandfather who lived at "Wharerua" in the 1950s.
