Wellington Coastguard Service, Wellington Sea Rescue Inc.

Registered charity, formed in 1968 after the Wahine disaster in Wellington Harbour. Originally known as the Wellington Harbour Lifeboat Institution and based at Eastbourne, crewed by Wellington-based volunteers. In 1969, the organisation's name was changed to Wellington Sea Rescue Inc. The organisation operated from a boatshed until 1982 when it moved to its base at Evans Bay Marina. In 1991 the organisation affiliated with the Royal New Zealand Coastguard Federation, and changed its name to Wellington Volunteer Coastguard Inc. At 2021 the organisation has approximately 80 volunteers who operate on weekends and public holidays, and may be called out at other times.
