McWhannell album 5

Description: Collection of photographs created and probably taken by Rhoda McWhannell, from the time of her marriage to Frederick McWhannell. The first scene shows them on their honeymoon, at One Tree Hill in Auckland, on 13th November 1922. From there they go to Whangarei, with views of the Whangarei Hospital, men playing tennis, a group of three men and a woman entitled `The foundations of "Fairview" Onerahi', and Whangarei Falls. Following Whangarei are a number of views of Russell, including the jetty and `The Gables', and the yacht `Kitty fraser'. Later in November they reach the Coromandel Peninsula, and photographs include Cyril Cory-Wright in the launch `Eilepa', and a photograph of Mrs Cory-Wright with her children Patsy and Derek; and the Reverend Norrie (minister of the Coromandel Peninsula). The next group of photographs show Mrs Shires, and scenes of sheep mustering at `Oruru', Kaitieke in the King Country. At the front of the album is an envelope with mostly unidentified people, taken much later, most of them being coloured. Also inserted in the album is a newspaper cutting from the Herald (Section 2, Wednesday 13 June 1984), on a young couple (Tony and Sue Clark) who had managed to create a successful farm from very rough hill country on the Kawhautahi Road, near Kaitieke. Quentin Hooper Smith - Te Pa (Waitahora)

Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Quentin Hooper Smith accompanied by supporting land documents; history of land ownership, recipe for Emma Hooper Smith's Christmas cake; photographs of farm and family Te Pa comprises 2 sections, one that formed part of the Education Reserve and the other balloted in 1902. Samuel Hooper Smith bought the latter in 1903, at which time it was named Loch Catherine. He renamed the farm Hyndhope and went into partnership with Mrs Ida Lane of Chesterhope in 1907. The 1200 acre Education reserve section (Te Pa) was managed by Samuel for William Nelson from 1901 to 1903 (until he bought Hyndhope). The name Te Pa had by this time come to denote the amalgamated properties. In 1907 Samuel and Mrs Lane bought `Te Pa' for £3000. The partnership lasted until 1924 when Samuel took it over. His son Eion took over the property after WWII, later passing to his son Quentin. In 2007 the property was awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Consists of Marshall's recollections of his life on Tututotara station in the 1860's. He discusses clothes, transportation, mail services, social diversions and other aspects of European farm life of this period. Also included is a newspaper clipping which gives biographical details. Source of title - transcribed title. Postscript by MKC (Ken] Marshall, Motu Kowhai May 1937, explains that this item was copied from Marshall's `Then and Now'. In this Marshall took the `then' as 1862 and compared it to `now' which was 1937. R Marshall did not copy the `now' part as he thought 'anyone reading this would make comparison with one's own time of living'.
