Born Schleswig-Holstein and arrived in NZ ca 1885; lived in Bluff and working for Nichol Bros, merchants, for 15 years. Naturalised in 1893. Moved to Wgtn and in 1907 established 'Joosten and Murie', an import and agency company. Arrested 1918 as an alien, interned Somes Island, finally the matter was cleared up but he left ca 1922 and established a business in Hamburg.

Description: Murie describes Joosten's life since he came to New Zealand from Schleswig-Holstein about 1885, his subsequent career and the establishment of the company, Joosten and Murie, in 1907. Although naturalised in 1893, Joosten's life changed in 1918 when he was arrested as an alien and interned on Somes Island in 1918. Murie has supplied background information about Joosten and has used extracts from files held by National Archives to elaborate on the problems Joosten endured.
