Downes, Peter, 1928-2022

Broadcaster and writer. Head of Light Entertainment for the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation; manager of the National Programme for Radio New Zealand 1977-1985. Retired in 1988, when he received the Mobil Radio Award for outstanding contributions to radio in New Zealand. Has researched and written several books about New Zealand musical and theatre history. Produced several CDs for the Alexander Turnbull Library's `Treasures in sound' series.

Recalls engagement by the Australian Opera Company, and his experiences in learning to sing opera. Describes development of his career as opera singer, and in partnering Joan Sutherland in Australian Opera appearances, including her farewell performances in 1990. Description: Photographs of husband and wife opera singers Rosina Buckman and Maurice d'Oisly, and their friends and collegues, taken between circa 1900 and circa 1925. Includes three albums compiled by Maurice d'Oisly with photographs possibly taken by him. -One album of images dated 1909-1917 of Buckman, d'Oisly and friends taken in a range of places in England. -Two albums of images taken during the 1913-1914 world tour of the Quinlan Opera Company showing d'Oisly and colleagues on board ship, and during other rest periods, in a variety of countries, when they were not performing. Also includes a broken photograph of Rosina Buckman as a young woman, an autographed photograph of singer Peggy Ford dated 1922, and a photograph taken inside the Royal Albert Hall, London, probably during World War I, at a concert for soldiers. Comprises three main groups of images, relating respectively to New Zealand opera singers; the broadcaster and collector Brian Salkeld; and the war service of Alexander Hamilton Knowles during World War II. Seven of the negatives show the recording of the operetta `Monsieur Beaucaire' in 1960. The other negative shows a bell tower and was probably taken in the Middle East during World War II. . Description: Scrapbooks, scores, papers, and photographs relating to singer Oscar Natzke (1912-1951). The scrapbooks were assembled by his widow Winifred, including clippings, photographs, ephemera, typescripts, drawings. Also an annotated published vocal score of 'The Messiah', originally belonging to Natzke's teacher, Albert Garcia. The loose material includes photocopied articles, correspondence, and four photographic prints of Natzke. Some of this relates to a National Library of New Zealand album project of Natzke's music released in 2000. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music. Title supplied by Library. Franz Oscar Natzke (later written as 'Natzka') was a New Zealand born opera singer of Polish-German descent who had an international singing career, until his death in 1951.
