Allen, George Frederick, 1837-1929

Architect, surveyor, teacher, tourist guide. Born London, died Wanganui 28 Feb 1929. Well-known Wanganui surveyor, architect and artist in pencil and watercolour. Designed Oneida homestead at Fordell. His second name is frequently spelt with a `k' at the end. (See DNZB, Vol 2, 1870-1900, p5-6)

Description: Folder contains a translation into English from Maori by Cowan of George F Allen's account of Bishop Selwyn's visit to Ngati Tuwharetoa leader Te Heuheu Tukino at Re Rapa, Taupo in the 1840s. The account relates the offering of a sleeping partner for Bishop Selwyn by Te Heuheu Tukino. On the last page of the document Cowan discusses the veracity of such an action by the Maori chief. Cowan also notes this account by Allen is referred to in his book `1902 supplementary edition of Willis's guide book of new route for tourists, Auckland-Wellington, via the Hot Springs, Taupo, the volcanoes and the Wanganui River', page 122. Allen's account is in Maori and suggest that the reader must ask "some Pakeha-Maori to interpret it for them". Also contains an unidentified poem which begins "How brightly the dawn maid comes webbed in rosy plumes". Language - Translated from Maori into English Source of title - Transcribed from item Cowan worked as a writer, historian and journalist. He was a fluent Maori speaker and wrote the two-volume `The New Zealand wars: a history of the Maori campaigns and the pioneering period (1922-1923)'. Description: Watercolour depicting view of Crater Lake on Mount Ruapehu showing rocks and snow. The artist has painted himself into the image. There are two figures standing on the peak. Handritten text below the image reads "Sketched from a point inside the crater on the North side, about 50 feet above the level of the water, on March 8 1984 - Mr Blacket's photo taken from the opposite side of the crater, was done about a year before. Mr Dunnage's first photo taken from the opposite side of the crater, was done about a week after this sketch. His second photo taken from the opposite side of the crater was done in April 1895 soon after the erruption of March 10 1895. The black blot in the left foreground is my head. The two figures on the ridge on the left are Mr Willis and my son Frank. The little stream with a waterfall is just over my head, behind the sharp little rocky peak and between it and the snow-field.
