Description: The logbook begins on 20 July 1885 and ends 2 June 1886 and has been kept by more than one person. Samuel Calkin was a teacher at Te Moari school, near Kaeo, ca 1882-1887. The diary is only for one year but has detailed daily entries generally beginning with the weather and an account of his sciatica, with details of the morphine he was taking for it at the head of the entry. Calkin mentions who was staying at the boarding house, records financial matters, gardening activities, his bootmaking, shop and photography businesses, the cases where he helped in dentiistry (administering anaesthesia) and any unusual happenings or circumstances, such as going on a musical tour. It is believed he next worked on whaling ships, arriving in NZ in 1865. He married Louisa Edmonds in 1869, taught at native schools (1875-1887), then became a boarding-house proprietor in Whangarei. During this time he also had a photography business, kept a shop, helped with dentistry, played in a music group (he was a professional violinist and pianist), kept a garden and was concerned about his intake of morphine to treat his sciatica.
