Son of Dr Alfred Charles Barker and his wife Emma (née Bacon); arrived with parents in Canterbury in Dec 1850. Educated Christ's College (1854-1865), Christchurch; worked land at Ohapi, near Temuka, with his brother Dick; later joined National Bank of Australia, became their West Coast and Waimea gold-buyer; returned to Ohapi; then Chatham Islands. Travelled with E R Chudleigh to Australia, United States, United Kingdom and Europe in 1870s; returned to farm Ohapi; appointed librarian to Supreme Court in 1887. Was a talented botanist specialising in native trees and shrubs. Secretary for the St John's Ambulance and member of the Christchurch Beautifying Association. Married (1 Oct 1878) Frances Harriet Lean, seven children.
