Description: Interviews with three career public servants who, during the 1940s-1970, worked as inspectors, commissioners and chairmen of the Public Service Commission, which became the State Services Commission in 1962. The interviewees all entered the Public Service in the 1920s and they describe their early lives and education, and their time working in the Public Trust, Housing Corporation, Internal Affairs, Maori Affairs, Agriculture, Customs, Defence and Inland Revenue departments. They describe the work and evolution of the State Services Commission. Subjects discussed include job training, studying while working, Diploma of Public Administration, women workers, equal pay, staffing during World War II, rehabilitation of returning servicemen, strengths of the old Public Service, George Bolt, Hunn Report, 1962 Royal Commission of Inquiry into State Services, comparisons of management in the public and private sectors, remaining non-political, wage-setting and the PSA (Public Service Association). Description: Two interviewees, Ron David Greenwood and Kurt Schwarz, provide their views, experiences and memories of business management in New Zealand post World War II, specifically relating to their significant involvement in the New Zealand Institute of Business Management (NZIM). As founding members, they discuss the establishment and development of the organisation, including early venues, growing membership and company support. They talk about adopting the army's group discussion method for teacher training at NZIM. Mentioned: Alan Crothall, Peter Eastwood, Eric Halstead, Dennis McClure, Phillip Seger. The interviewees recall that NZIM initially focussed on supervision, sales, time and motion studies and production planning. As the focus on industrial management widened beyond production level, courses changed to include: cost accounting, cost forecasting, motivation, ergonomics and marketing. Both men discuss NZIM's management training in relation to universities and technical institutes as well as their own philosophy of management. Other subjects discussed: the formation of the New Zealand Administrative Staff College, NZIM's relationship with the Department of Labour, women and Maori in management. Each interviewee talks about involvement in other organisations such as the Parkinsonism Society, the Ron Greenwood Environmental Trust, Rotary Club, as well as in voluntary work with the Citizens Advice Bureau, the courts, the health sector, and Meals on Wheels.
