The photographs show panning for gold, and washing clothes, as well as a posed group portrait in the miners' camp (see Historical Notes). Included together with the photographs are captions describing the people in the scene and what they are doing. Source of title - Title supplied by Library During the depression of the 1930s, the New Zealand government subsidised unemployed workers who were willing to mine for gold in the hostile climate of the Lindis Pass area. Mackay album

Description: Album created with aviation pioneer Horatio Murdoch MacKay. Photographs include several in which MacKay was the first man to fly across the Tasman as a passenger, making the flight with Charles Kingsford Smith. One sequence shows Boeing biplane (purchased by New Zealand Airways Ltd in 1934), shipped from Vancouver and assembed in New Zealand, and the first landing at Green Island `Aerodrome'. A number of views of different aeroplanes, both monoplanes and biplanes follows. There are a large number of postcards of Launceston, Jenolan Caves, and Ballarat in Australia, and caves in the Waitomo area of New Zealand. Photographs of a group travelling on a South Island tour by White Star Taxis, a company which MacKay established, including views of the first hotel at Wanaka `The White Star Private Hotel'. One scene shows one of the taxis after an accident. Other scenes show a group skiing, a group at the summit of the Crown Range, and a large group on a motor launch. The last sequence is chiefly family photographs, including several houses, and two different wedding parties; several portraits, possibly of Horatio MacKay's wife Helen Emma (nee Griffiths). Description: Mounted family photographs, taken by E A Philipps, Alan Spicer, William John Clarke, and unknown photographers, from possibly 1910 to the 1920s. Most of the photographs are of the Nicol family (Vera Mosen's mother's family) as well as two from the Mosen family. PAColl-10552-2-1 is by E. A Philllips and shows Edwin Herbert Mosen on the left and Robert John Mosen on the right of a large tree they are cutting down. As well as the photographer's name on the left front, the mount is printed on the right front with "late of Dunedin and Invercargill". PAColl-10552-2-2 is a wedding group, showing, from left to right, Ivy Rose, Dora Lillian Rose (the bride), Edwin Herbert Mosen (the groom), and Robert John Mosen. PAColl-10552-2-3 is a photograph of Elizabeth (Bessie) Ward and Vera Florence Ward as children. PAColl-10552-2-4 is a studio portrait of six Nicol siblings, including Florence (left), Frank (seated), Vera, Rose Nicol (seated right), and two others. In it Florence Nicol is younger than in her 1913 wedding photograph; the photograph was possibly taken about 1910. PAColl-10552-2-5 is a Nicol family group seated outdoors. Names are inscribed in pencil at the bottom of the print. From left to right " Uncle Jack [Nicol], grandma, Frank [Nicol] , Hope (Jack's wife) [Nicol], Nellie, Aunty Rose [Nicol]". The photograph is inscribed on the back "The Mosen family Raetihi" (which has been crossed out) and "The Nichol family Marton"; the 'h' in 'Nichol' has been crossed out. PAColl-10552-2-6 is a photograph of Norman, Florence (nee Nicol) and Elizabeth Ward. It is inscribed on the front left "taken October 1914". It is inscribed on the back "Xmas 1914 To Nell with love from Norman & Florrie wishing you a Merry Xmas & a happy New Year". PAColl-10552-2-7 is a photograph of Elizabeth (Bessie), Vera and Hugh Ward as children. It is inscribed on the back "Love to Auntie Mary Wishing you many happy returns of the day Aug 1923", in ink. There is also a faint pencilled inscription that says "Gate Pa". PAColl-10552-2-8 is a wedding photograph of Florence Nicol and Norman Ward, taken by Alan Spicer, Wellington. It is inscribed on the back "To Rose from Norman and Florrie Feb 1913". PAColl-10552-2-9 is a group photograph taken by William John Clarke of the Palmerston North District attendees at a Presbyterian Bible Class Conference in Oamaru over late December 1926 to January 1927 that includes Vera Nicol and Jack Nicol. It is inscribed on the back in ink "PN District Palmerston North Marton Feilding Taihape". Two other hands have written in pencil " Timaru [crossed out] Oamaru Conference 1915-1916 [crossed out] not 1916". There are other prints of PAColl-10552-2-5 and PAColl-10552-2-9 in Vera Nicol's photograph album (PA1-o-1972). The donor provided notes with names of subjects for some of the prints, which were later annotated by an ATL curator in discussion with the donor. These notes are in a separate envelope in the box holding the prints. Manuscript material and photographs relating to Frank Nicol are held by Archives Central in the Rangitikei District Council Collection.
