Discusses his family background, which is Irish on both sides, and his paternal grandfather, James Larkin, who was responsible for building the Auckland-Thames railway lines and the first Grafton Bridge. Describes growing up in Auckland and New Plymouth, his mother's emphasis on the importance of education and his own education. Talks about his involvement in sport including representing Taranaki at cricket and being a New Zealand University cricket blue. Describes going to Victoria University, lecturing in the English Department and his love of literature. Briefly talks about being in the Navy in World War II before joining External Affairs in 1946. Notes that this was the time of preparation for peace treaties with the Axis countries. Describes the `top people' as Sir George Laking, Tom Davin, Frank Corner, Sir Alister McIntosh and Foss Shanahan. Mentions the formative influence of J.V. Wilson and working with Rex Cunningham and Charles Craw. Describes the atmosphere in the Department and `team spirit'.
