Description: Material extracted by Robert McNab from New Zealand material in French archives (including the archives of the Ministere de la Marine) concerning Lavaud and his vessel l'Aube Contains significant parts of two essays written by Lavaud, commandant of L'Aube. These essays describe the attempts of colonisation of the South Island of New Zealand by the French, principally in Akaroa. Some passages try to rehabilitate Baron de Thierry. Contains various letters, most of them to Lavaud, among are which letters from Bishop Pompallier about Wallis and Futuna, letters from William Hobson and letters from C B Robinson (postmaster at Akaroa). Although most of the volume is in French, some letters are in English. Quantity: 1 volume(s) (pp 248-385). Physical Description: Typescript (27 cm; blue buckram) Provenance: Collected by Robert McNab, probably during 1904-1909 when he was doing archival research into early New Zealand history. Description: Reproduction of a watercolour by Louis-Auguste de Sainson. A view from a hill to the south of Paihia, looking north along the beach line, with the houses and gardens of the Church Missionary Society station, home of the Rev. Henry Williams and his family. Two European men and a small boy are standing on the hill in the foreground beside a tree. The artist visited the site in March 1827. A pencil drawing by Sainson of this view, dated 12 March 1827, is in the Archives Nationales, Paris, (Marine JJ 102 A f 14); and the original watercolour is in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. There are also later engraved versions of the same view, one in Dumont d'Urville's 'Voyage pittoresque autour du monde', Paris, 1835, Vol 2, p. 356 and one in Domeny de Rienzi's 'Oceanie' Vol 2, Paris 1836, plate 174. A group of Maori outside the fence appear to be selling potatoes to a European. No. S97 in Richard S. Schneiderman's catalogue raisonne. State vi/vii. Other Titles - New Zealand. Description: An extensive view of Jacks Bay (Manawaora Bay, Bay of Islands) looking down from a hill to the south of the bay, along the foreshore and out towards the sea. A ship, probably the Astrolabe, is shown anchored out in the bay and a small schooner is shown at the water's edge. The artist visited the Bay of Islands in 1827, and signs of European habitation are slight.
