Surveyor, public servant, farmer, artist. Born probably at Sandwich Kent, England. Arrived in Wellington on `Oriental' 1840 as an assistant surveyor for the New Zealand Company. Explored much of the Wellington and Wairarapa regions. Returned to England 1843; appointed Company surveyor for the Otago settlement. In 1846 surveyed sites for Dunedin and Port Chalmers; explored Central and Southern Otago. Made early pencil views of Dunedin for the New Zealand Company. Appointed a government surveyor 1851. Description: Copy of a topographic map of the Wellington region from Port Nicholson and Paliser Bay following the Ruamahanga River to the Manawatu River to the coast at Foxton. The Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges are named as are rivers, bays, heads, some settlements, tracks and roads. Some sections are marked and pa sites. Wakefield, Tiffin and Kettle have made descriptive notes about the terrain, views and navigable rivers on the map as well as at the bottom of it. Note on catalogue card states: Photocopy of col. Description: A day-to-day account of an early Wellington solicitor who dined regularly at Barrett's Hotel, was a member of the Britannia Club, took part in balls, cricket matches and race meetings, and was an associate of such NZ Company figures as Daniel Wakefield and Edward Catchpool. Socialised regularly with British army officers of 58th, 96th and 99th regiments. The diary entries cover 2 feb 1846 to 31 Jan 1847.
