Description: Arthur Henry Richards born Hokitika 1899. Outlines family background - both grandfathers were Methodist Ministers. Maternal grandfather, Rev William Lee arrived in New Zealand 1870 and was well known in Oamaru. Recalls early life; strong methodist upbringing; Sunday routine; childhood pranks; first wireless; furnishings of the parsonages; chores and home help; flu Epidemic (1918); transport - Enfield motorbike and sidecar, later a model T Ford; Depression (1930s), with reference to riots in Wellington and the smashing of windows at Kirkcaldies; Temperance organization - The Band of Hope; social activities which were mostly linked to church; World War I farewell parades and recalls the return of the first troops including Frickleton, VC and the Tweedie's hero welcome reception in the town. Describes the effect of the war on Napier High School where many masters were called away. Recalls first day and first jobs at Customs, Napier, based mainly at the Port building at Ahuriri. Talks about Napier Port, describing the effects of the earthquake damage and social life in Napier before the earthquake. Other topics covered include: Salary cuts under William Fergusson Massey; unions, with reference to Public Service Association; loading and shipping clearance; Waterside strike [Lockout] 1951; smuggling; big petrol fire at Napier port; office procedures; indecent postcards and publications; use of warrant; inspection of vineyards; illegal fishing; shipwreck of the `Tongariro'; National Tobacco factory; Napier breweries - Sunshine in Wellesley Road, White Swan in Hastings Street and Newbiggins Brewery (now Leopard) Hastings. Discusses Import Licensing which became Import control, with reference to Sir Alexander Ross, deputy governor of the Reserve Bank; Legislation governing imports; importers - pressures and loopholes and relations with importers; Bureau of Industry; censorship of letters during war; cigarette duty and social life in customs.
