Born in Renfrewshire, Scotland. He won a scholarship to Glasgow University but in 1862 joined his family members when they sailed to Otago. Denniston studied then practised law in Dunedin and in 1889 was made a Judge of the Supreme Court (1889-1918). He married Helen Mary Bathgate in 1887.
