Description: Frank Drew was born in Wanganui. Outlines his family background - grandfather, Samuel Henry founded the Wanganui Regional Museum and also founded the firm Drew Jewellers (Wanganui) - father, Henry George was a highly skilled taxidermist working to produce exhibits for many different museums around New Zealand, and was an honorary curator of Wanganui Regional Museum. Frank describes in detail his father's interest in natural history. Refers to Andreas Reischek, also refers to the Collection of New Zealand birds at the Wembley Exhibition. Frank worked as a clerk for the Royal Insurance for eight years. He joined the Airforce during the war and was kept on as an instructor. When the war ended he joined the family business taking over when his father retired in 1948. The optician's side of the business was dropped when father retired. Describes Percy Bremington, a jeweller employed in the workshop in 1915, remaining with the firm until his death at the age of 82. Other people mentioned are; Logan Keatley (watchmaker); Archie Robertson (an enthusiastic photographer); Cray O'Connor (a wool auctioneer); T W Downes; Norm Hubbard and Nixon's boat yard. Recalls story about father being shot in the head and presumed dead during World War I (six months before war ended) but survived to serve in World War II. Talks about father's interest in natural history and his influence on her choice of career. Gives reasons for choosing to study starfish and describes different kinds of starfish. Refers to professor of zoology, Laurie Richardson (a Canadian), and his dislike of women. Also refers to Barry Fell, a spectacular lecturer. Mentions joining the Eotanin Research boat at Smithsonian. Continues talking of experiences in Malta and Ghana. Reflects back on schooldays at Woodford House which she attended for a year and a half before going to Napier Park High. Feels the only advantage gained from Woodford House was that it was one of the few girls' schools recognised overseas. Describes Miss Hogg and Miss Moseley. Description: Interview with Jim (James) Lambie, born in Stratford in 1972. Explains his early childhood memories of a trip to Somes Island when he was four. Mentions his father was a livestock officer with the Ministry of Agriculture (MAF) in the 1970s and the family lived on the Island for short period. Recalls a massive flood in the Hutt Valley, and seeing debris washing past the island. Comments on attending kindergarten in Petone, and the smell from the Gear Meat plant. Refers to living in Gisborne until they returned to Somes Island in 1981 when he was eight. Mentions moving to Turangi in 1986. Talks about the Somes Island community and the children living there. Discusses daily routines revolving around the boat, after school jobs, and freedom on the island although some facilities were off limits. Comments on the lifestyle, grocery shopping, emergencies, and Christmas on the Island. Talks about gun emplacements and beaches as playgrounds, fishing off the wharf, beachcombing and chasing skinks. Mentions long-term friendships he developed with other children on the Island. Refers to his father's work with Forest and Bird volunteers planting trees on the island from 1981 and watching the island change. Mentions that MAF trusted Forest and Bird and Rod Sutherland was pivotal. Reflects on his time living on Somes Island as being privileged and special.
