Paris, Edmond Francois, 1806-1893

French admiral, who served under Dumont d'Urville on the Astrolabe, 1826-1829, including time in New Zealand and the South Pacific. A skilled artist, he made a number of drawings in the course of this and subsequent voyages, with several of his drawings engraved for publication. He then served aboard the Favourite, visiting the Pacific and New Zealand again. In 1837 he made a third circumnavigation as commander of the Artemise. He rose to high rank in the French navy. He also organised the Musee de la Marine.
