Hill, Mable, 1872-1956, McIndoe, John (Mrs), 1872-1956, McIndoe, Mabel, 1872-1956, McIndoe, Mable, 1782-1956

Artist. Daughter of Charles Hill (hatter) and Eliza Ann Hulbert Hill. Sister of Alfred Hill the composer. Born Auckland. Moved to Wellington in 1875. Attended Wellington School of Design in about 1890. Account of wedding, 12 January 1898, to Dunedin printer John McIndoe (with photos) in NZ Mail, 20 January 1898, page 21. The couple lived in Dunedin, and Mabel joined the Otago Art Society. Mother of Archibald McIndoe (1900-1960), John Leslie McIndoe (1898-1995) and Elizabeth Mason. Used her maiden name in her art. After her husband's death in 1926 she travelled extensively in Europe. At the end of the Second World War she moved to Sussex, England, and died there in 1956. Description: Colour notes, a recipe for Scotch broth, rough sketches of countryside around Suffolk, Surrey, Kersey, Hickling Broad, Norfolk, Tossa de Mar, Cataluna Spain (1952?). Sketchbook has been only partly used, with many empty pages. It has also been started from both ends, with earlier material pages 1 to 19 or 20, later material from page 21 to the end. Suggested dates for this sketchbook are based on the fact that Mabel McIndoe (Hill) moved to Britain from New Zealand after the war (1945). She is known to have visited Kersey in 1934 and may have revisited it during her later sojourn in Britain. One page (E-518-019) with a list of paintings sold to a Christchurch dealer is dated 11 August 1943. Mabel McIndoe visited Tossa del Mar in 1952. Inscriptions: (In ink on front cover): Mabel Hill, 16 Glebe Place, Chelsea S.W.3; Inside front cover: addresses in pencil of three women in Kersey, Suffolk. The address in ink of a man in Hamburg.
