Description: Minute book of the New Zealand Maori Council, covering their inaugural meeting on 28 June 1962 to 19 May 1970, and estrays that were tipped into the minute book. The minute book includes topics such as Maori health, Maori education, Maori land, Waitangi Day celebrations, Maori wardens and initiatives to strengthen the cultural wellbeing of Maori. Includes a discussion of a Springbok tour to Gisborne (26 Aug 1965 minutes), and a Young Maori Leaders' Conference (4 & 5 Dec 1969 minutes). The estrays consist of a speech by Mr J R Hanan (Minister of Maori Affairs), and opening speech by Mr J K Hunn (Secretary of Maori Affairs), at the inaugural Maori Council meeting, 28 June 1962, and ephemera items. Hanan's speech refers to the 1961 Hunn report, Maori leadership, discrimination, the Maori Education Foundation, and Maori land development. Hunn's speech refers to Maori achievement, and also highlights the policy of 'integration' as opposed to previous policies of 'assimilation' saying: "Under a policy of integration all races can preserve their identity and contribute to the national identity". The ephemera items include a Christmas card from Te Kitohi and Lynmore Akaahu, and an 'Advice of delivery' card from 1983. In the first half of the interview (in Māori) they discuss: Mead's article about the Treaty of Waitangi (published in a Wellington newspaper on the previous Sunday), the need for Māori to communicate with non Māori, the reformulation of the Department of Māori Affairs and Te Tira Ahu Iwi, and the interim replacement for Te Tari Māori. In the second half of the interview (in English) they discuss: the Fijian coup in the light of tino rangatiratanga, the issue of whether traditional Polynesian culture copes with modern democracy, the pace of change and views of the present New Zealand government on rangatiratanga. Mead suggests the agenda for the future; Māori seats, tino rangatiratanga bill, and devolution.
