Basham, Barbara Isabel Louise, 1915-2002

Born Eltham, Taranaki. Daughter of Frederick Basham, 1869-1950 and Maud Ruby Basham (née Taylor; 1879-1963). Served on the `Oranje' (hospital ship) during World War II. After the war was granted a Rehabilitation Bursary to study broadcasting in Canada. Edited the Review and went of the `Oranje' on its first voyage to New Zealand. Awarded an OBE (1981) for services to people of New Zealand and Broadcaster of the Year Award as she retired. See Evening Post Obituaries (Thursday, January 17, 2002)

The black base has a plaque inscribed "presented to Mrs. Basham by St Mary's Church members, Waipukaurau July 1924". The cup was likely pesented to Mrs Maud Basham when she left Waipukurau after six years, to go to Ngatea. She had taught music and choir, and organised entertainment groups in Waipukurau. Mother worked for Radio as Aunt Daisy. Recalls Depression (1930s), leaving school and getting job in radio through her mother until the outbreak of World War II when she joined Red Cross and applied to go overseas. Describes Red Cross training and explains system of medicals and exams for call-up and getting on the `Oranje'. Describes journey to Egypt, going through Canal to Avonmouth, England. Explains Officer privilege of VADs on board. Mentions butterflies at Mombasa.
