Description: Papers relating to Maori music and waiata. Includes the script for a radio programme about Maori music by Phyllis Williams (Kirimamae), called "Maori Song Forms" on the scripts. Many of the waiata featured in the programme relate to Ngati Porou, and people mentioned in the programme include Sir Apirana Ngata, Ngaropi White, Materoa [Reedy], Hera Haereroa, Enoka Te Pakaru, Hiria Tamati, Matekino Brown, Alfred Hill and Tuta Nihoniho. Also mentioned is the story of Pou (Pourangahua) and the origins of the haka associated with Te Rauparaha "Ka mate, ka mate" are discussed saying it has connections to the story of Maui capturing the sun. Different kinds of waiata or song forms are discussed as well as titi torea, or Maori stick games. Also includes lyrics and translations of many Maori waiata, a booklet of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, translated into Maori, with notation, and a programme for the 123rd Waitangi Day Celebration, at Waitangi on 6 Feb 1963. Description: Comprises recorded lectures, kaupapa gigs, panel discussions, gallery talks and performances to complement the exhibition, which was held between 9 March and 9 June at the National Library Gallery. The exhibition title was 'Kahungunu ka moe... ka puta... Te Hononga Marekura : photographic portraits of Ngati Kahungunu by Samuel Carnell, 1870-1906. See accompanying pamphlet. The original concept for this exhibition was developed by the National Library with Ngati Kahungunu kaumatua, the late Tohara (Charlie) Mohi in 1998. The Carnell Collection of photographs he found comprised 260 photographs of Kahungunu tipuna, of which only 20 were identified. The Kahungunu iwi is based in Hawkes Bay and the Wairarapa. The original exhibition was held at Mihiroa marae in Hastings, then the Hawkes Bay principal researchers of this exhibition were Ngatai Huata and Te Koha Tareha. Series 13 - 'Songs That Made New Zealand' project records

Description: Papers relating to the research and licensing for a book and CD tentatively titled 'Songs That Made New Zealand'. The book and CD were never produced. The songs are, 'Pokarekare Ana', 'God Defend New Zealand', 'On the Ball', 'Now is the Hour', and 'Ka Mate'. (Some papers include notes about other songs, such as 'Blue Smoke', 'Waiata Poi', and 'Hine e Hine'). Allan Thomas had written and presented conference papers on the songs, and was working on a project to put the five papers in a book. There was an associated project to produce a recording of the songs and others, through Kiwi Pacific Records. Some papers in the series document the process of developing the CD and obtaining licensing for the songs. Papers include some copies of the original conference papers or journal articles, correspondence regarding aspects of the project, drafts of papers, some material related to VUW coursework, and research material, such as newspaper clippings about the songs, and copies of sheet music and record covers. There is also one folder containing a covering note by Allan Thomas about the papers and the project. Although in the note Allan Thomas said that the book would be called 'Songs that Made New Zealand Great', some papers refer to the title, 'Great New Zealand Songs of the Century'. One publication, presumably used for reference purposes, has not been kept with the research records. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 11 folder(s).
