Description: Comprises letters from Tarakawa to S P Smith discussing traditional matters (27 Nov 1893, 14, 29 August, 12, 17 Oct 1894); and a paper titled `Whakamarama-tanga o te pepa puru na'. The latter has a note by Smith describing this paper as an explanation of some matters referred to in his paper `The Coming of Te Arawa and Tainui canoes'. The traditional matter discussed in the letters includes Te Arawa whakapapa, information about the migration, arrival and settlement of Te Arawa and Tainui and related karakia, and notes about 19th century conflicts in the Bay of Plenty district; there are also discussions about the derivation of various Maori placenames, and about Maori attitudes to the use of traditional information.
